Chemical weathering Flashcards
Where does it occur?
where rocks are exposed to air and moisture so chemical processes break down the rocks
What is the main chemical process?
solution as it combines with erosion
What does oxidation cause?
the rocks to disintegrate when oxygen dissolved in water reacts with rock minerals
What does oxidation form?
oxides and hydroxides
What does oxidation especially affect?
ferrous, iron-rich rocks
What does hydration make rocks?
more susceptible to further chemical weathering
What does hydration involve?
physical addition of water to minerals in the rock
What does hydration cause?
rocks to expand, creating stress causing the rock to disintegrate
What is hydrolysis?
where mildly acidic water reacts with minerals in the rock to create clays and dissolvable salts - degrading the rock
When does carbonation occur?
when co2 dissolved in rainwater makes a weak carbonic acid, which reacts with calcium carbonate to form calcium bicarbonate which dissolves easily in water
Where is carbonation more effective?
locations with cooler temperatures as this increases the amount of carbon dioxide dissolved in water
