Chemical Vocabulary Flashcards
Mixture
A substance containing 2 or more materials with different properties.
Ex. Trail mix, cake batter
Property
Characteristic of an object,
Ex. Color, luster, texture
Solution
A special mixture formed when one or more materials dissolves in one another.
Ex. Saltwater, hot chocolate, lemonade
Dissolving
Two materials mixing together evenly.
The process of a solute and solvent forming a solution.
Ex. Cocoa powder dissolves into milk to create hot chocolate
Evaporation
To turn slowly into a gas.
A liquid changes into a gas.
Ex. Water turning into water vapor
Crystal
The solid form of a material that can be identified by its natural shape or pattern.
Ex. Salt crystals formed when saltwater evaporates
Solute
A substance that dissolves in a solvent to form a solution.
Ex. Salt/sugar dissolves in water so they are solutes
Solvent
A substance that dissolves a solute to form a solvent solution.
Ex. Water dissolves salt, so water is a solvent.
Concentration
The ratio of the amount of solute compared to the solvent.
Ex. 1 cup sugar in 2 cups water is more concentrated than 1 cup sugar and 4 cups of water
Dilute
Make a solution less concentrated.
Ex. Add water
