Chemical tests Flashcards
Test for hydrogen
A burning splint at the open end of a test tube explodes with a SQUEAKY POP
Test for oxygen
Relights a glowing splint
Carbon dioxide
When bubbled through limewater (aqueous Ca(OH)2) the limewater will go cloudy, cloudy when shaken with the gas. Carbon dioxide will also extinguish a glowing splint.
Test for Chlorine gas
damp blue litmus paper will turn red and then be bleached turning white
Test for carbonates
Add a DILUTE ACID and observe EFFERVESCENCE as CO2 is produced
Halides
Add AgNO3 acidified in nitric acid in an aqueous solution and observe these precipitates. White precipitate for chloride, cream for bromide and yellow for iodide
White = Cl- Cream = Br- Yellow = I-
Sulfates
Add BaCl2 (barium chloride) acidified in HCl in an aqueous solution and observe a white precipitate of insoluble Barium Sulphate
Test for metal cations
Add NaOH (aq)
Fe2+ = green Fe3+ = brown Cu2+ = blue
Al3+, Ca2+, Mg2+ = white precipitate
Lithium flame test
CRIMSON RED
Potassium flame test

Test for the presence of water
Add anhydrous copper (II) sulphate and observe a colour change from white to blue (CuSO4)
Solubility of nitrates
All soluble
