Chemical Reactions Vocab Flashcards
Pure Substance
a particular kind of matter
Molecule
the smallest unit of a substance that has all the properties of that substance
Atom
The smallest possible unit of an element that still has the properties of the element. The major parts of an atom are protons, neutrons, and electrons
Property
A description of an object
Physical property
A description of an object using your five senses.
Chemical property
Determined by substances ability to react with other substances
Physical change
A change in the size or form of a substance without it becoming a new substance
Chemical Change (Reaction)
A change that causes the identity of a substance to change. Something new is created.
Melting point
The temperature at which a given solid turns into liquid
Boiling point
The temperature at which a given solid turns into gas
Solubility
The ability to be dissolved. Sugar is soluble in water.
Dissolve
To mix completely with liquid
Mass
The amount of matter in an object. Mass is not dependent on gravity it is not the same as wait. An objects mass remains the same anywhere, while it’s While it’s weight will change in space or on another planet.
Chemical equation
A representation of a reaction that uses chemical formulas and symbols.
Reactant
The component that is changed in a chemical reaction
