Chemical Reactions Lab Flashcards
When Zinc was placed in HCL it started to dissolve bubbly. Why is that?
When an acid reacts with a metal, it displaces the hydrogen to separate the hydrogen gas the ZnCl2
When manganese oxide is placed in hydrogen peroxide, it turned a dark color. Why is that?
When the oxygen was released, it formed a brown-ish precipitate that is specific to its metal ion
When 3cm of a magnesium ribbon was burned, it lit up brightly. Why is that?
The magnesium ribbon produced a reaction when lit, that emitted a sufficient intensity of heat and light
When 1 ml of calcium chloride was mixed with sodium carbonate, there was NO reaction. Why?
All resulting compounds remained soluble in the water, causing there to be no visible reaction.
Why did the 5 ml of ethanol expand when lit on fire?
Because the alcohol expanded more rapidly than the glass it is contained in. - thermal expansion
Single Replacement
A reaction in which one element replaces another in a compound
Double Replacement
Two ionic compounds that are exchanging anions and cations
Synthesis
Simple elements or compounds that combine for a more complex product
Decombustion
When a reaction breaks down into simpler substances
Combustion
A chemical reaction between any combustible substance to form an oxidized product - occurring in hydrocarbon (molecules with hydrogen and carbon components)
