Chemical Reactions Exam Flashcards
Exothermic Reaction
Energy is released during the reaction (produces heat, ect . . )
Endothermic Reaction
Energy is absorbed during the reaction (needs energy to happen)
Synthesis Reaction
A combination of two or more substances to form a new compound
Synthesis Reaction Example
Mg + 02 =?
= MgO
Decomposition Reaction
One substance breaks down into two or more simpler ones
Decomposition Reaction Example
FeO = ?
= Fe + O
Combustion Reaction
It involves the burning of a hydrocarbon with oxygen.
Combustion Reaction Example
C3H8 + O2 = ?
H2O + CO2
Single Replacement
A free element replaces another that is found in a compound
Single Replacement Example
Cu + Ag3PO4 = ?
Cu3(PO4)2 + Ag
Double Replacement
Elements from two different compounds exchange places with one another
Double Replacement Example
Cu3P2 + KNO3 = ?
Cu (NO3)2 + K3P
Law of Conservation of Matter
Matter cannot be created or destroyed. (So the number of atoms on one side of the equation have to be equal to the number of atoms on the other side of the equation)
What is an acid?
An acid is when positive hydrogen ions are produced in a solution when dissolved in WATER
What is an Alkaline (base) ?
A base is when negative hydroxide ions are produced in a solution when dissolved in WATER
What is the difference between a strong acid and a week acid?
In strong acids the majority of the substance that dissolves in water releases positive hydrogen ions, where as in weak acids very little of the substance that dissolves in water releases positive hydrogen ions.
