Chemical Reactions Definitions Flashcards
chemical reaction
a change in which atoms are rearranged to create new substances.
physical change
a change that is reversible, in which new substances are not made.
product
a substance that is made in a chemical reaction.
reactant
a starting substance in a chemical reaction.
combustion
a chemical reaction in which a substance reacts quickly with oxygen and gives out light and heat.
decomposition
a chemical reaction in which a compound breaks down to form simpler compound and/or elements.
displacement
when a metal takes the place of a less reactive metal in a compound.
endothermic reaction
takes energy from the surroundings.
exothermic reaction
releases energy to the surroundings.
fuel
a material that is burnt for energy.
neutralisation
when an acid and base react together to change the pH of a mixture.
oxidation
a chemical reaction in which substances react with oxygen to form oxides
thermal decomposition
when a compound is broken down using heat alone
word equation
a way of representing a chemical reaction simply. the reactants are on the left of the arrow, and the products are on the right. the arrow means reacts to make.
hazard
a possible source of danger
