Chemical reactions and Equations long 5 Flashcards
What is electrolysis ?
Electrolysis is defined as a process of decomposing ionic compounds into their elements by passing a direct electric current through the compound in a fluid form.
Is the volume of gases produced during electrolysis of water same? If not then what is the ratio in between them?
No, the volume of hydrogen and oxygen during the electrolysis of water is not same because water has hydrogen and oxygen in the ratio of 2:1. Water is composed of 2 atoms of H and 1 atom of O. Therefore the amount of H is double than that of O.
What happens in the iron nail activity and give the formula ?
The iron nail become brownish in color due to the copper residues and the color of the copper sulphate solution fades.
Formula - Fe + CuSO^4 → FeSO^4 + Cu
