chemical reactions!! Flashcards
chemical reaction
the process by which one or more substance change to produce one or more different substances
precipitate
a solid that is produced as a result of a chemical reaction in a solution
chemical formula
combination of chemical symbols and symbols to represent a substance
subscripts
a number written below and to the right of a chemical symbol in a formula
diatomic
2 molecules of an atom
coefficent
a number that is placed in front of a chemical symbol or formula
chemical equation
representation of a chemical reaction that uses symbols to show the relationship between the reactants and the products
reactant
a substance or molecule that participates in a chemical reaction (everything to the left of the arrow)
product
the substance that forms in a chemical reaction (to the right of the arrow = yields
Law of Conservation of Mass
The law that states that mass cannot be created or destroyed in ordinary chemical or physical changes. That means a chemical equation must show the same numbers and kinds of atoms on both sides of the arrow
exothermic reaction
chemical reaction in which heat is released to the surroundings
endothermic reaction
a chemical reaction that requires heat
concentration
measure of the high amount of one substance dissolved in another substance (higher concentration = more reactants at a given volume)
surface area
the amount of exposed surface of a substance (the reaction rate increases when more reactant particles are exposed to one another)
temperature
usually occur faster at higher temperatures
