Chemical Reactions Flashcards
Balanced Symbol Equation
In a balanced symbol equation, chemical formulae represents the reactants and products. The relative amounts of reactants and products are shown.
Thermal Decomposition
When a compound is broken down using heat alone
Neutralisation
When an acid and base (alkali) react together to change the pH of a mixture
Hydrogen+Oxygen
Hydrogen Oxide
Oxidation
A chemical reaction in which substances react with oxygen to form oxides.
Chemical Reaction
A change in which atoms are rearranged to create a new substance. Chemical reactions are irreversible.
Physical Reaction
A change that is reversible, in which new substances are not made. Examples of physical changes are change of state, dissolving.
Endothermic Reactions
Takes energy from the surroundings.
Exothermic Reactions
Releases energy to the surroundings.
Word Equation
A way of representing a chemical reaction simply. The reactants are on the left of the arrow, the products on the right. The arrow means reacts to make.
e.g. Copper+Oxygen———-Copper Oxide.
Reactant
A starting substance in a chemical reaction.
Product
A substance that is made in a chemical reaction.
Displacement
When a metal takes the place of a less reactive metal in a compound.
Fuel
A material that is burnt for energy.
Hazard
A possible source of danger.
