Chemical reactions Flashcards
balanced symbol equation
where the relative amounts of the reactants and products are represented by symbols.
chemical reaction
A change in which substances react with other substances to change their atomic structure and form new ones.
combustion
A chemical reaction where a substance reacts with oxygen to give out heat and light energy
conservation of mass
the concept that the reactants will always equal the mass of the products. Nothing bis lost or created during a reaction.
decomposition
A chemical reaction in which a compound breaks down to form simpler compounds and /or elements
displacement reaction
when a metal takes the place of a less reactive metal in a compound
eg.
2Al + Fe2O3 = > Al2O3 +2Fe
endothermic reactions
It takes energy from surroundings and therefore gets hotter
exothermic reactions
It releases energy into surroundings and therefore gets cooler.
fuel
something that is burned for energy.(usually heat)
hazard
A possible source of danger.
Neutralization
When an acid and a base(alkali) react to alter the pH of a substance
oxidaton
When a substance reacts with oxygen to form oxides.
eg.
Sb2S3 + 10O2 => 2SbO2 +3SO2
Physical reactions
A change that is reversible and does not form new substances. Examples include dissolving and changes of state.
Products and reactants
Product= a substance made from a chemical reaction Reactant= A stating substance in a chemical reaction.
Thermal decomposition
The breaking down of a substance due to only heat.
