Chemical Reactions Flashcards
What are the three types of chemical reactions?
Combustion, displacement, precipitation.
What is combustion?
Also known as burning. When a substance reacts with oxygen and new substances are formed and energy is given out as heat and light.
What is displacement?
Displacement of metal ions in solution by different metals. Activity series is used to predict weather metal will displace a metal cation in solution. Any metal on the right of it can be displaced.
What is precipitation?
When two solutions of ionic compounds are mixed together and an insoluble solid (precipitate) is formed.
What is rusting?
Rusting is corrosion (slowly destroy) of Iron (FE).
What is needed for rusting?
Iron, water and air (oxygen).
What can be used for rust prevention?
Painting, oiling and sacrificial metal.
