Chemical reactions Flashcards
What is a chemical reaction?
a process that involves rearrangement of the molecular or ionic structure of a substance, as opposed to a change in physical form or a nuclear reaction.
What is the conservation of mass?
In other words, the mass of any one element at the beginning of a reaction will equal the mass of that element at the end of the reaction.
What can u see that a chemical reaction has happened?
We see color change, bubbling, temperature change, precipitate, and gas forming.
What is the difference between physical and chemical change?
A physical change in a substance doesn’t change what the substance is. In a chemical change where there is a chemical reaction, a new substance is formed and energy is either given off or absorbed.
What does the temperature effect on the reaction of speed?
As you increase the temperature the rate of reaction increases. As a rough approximation, for many reactions happening at around room temperature, the rate of reaction doubles for every 10°C rise in temperature
What does precipitate mean?
cause (a substance) to be deposited in solid form from a solution.
What is a catalyst?
A substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction.
What is endothermic?
Requiring the absorption of heat.
What is Exothermic?
Heat energy is released .
