Chemical Reactions Flashcards
What is a Chemical Reaction
Two or more chemicals that produces one or more new chemical compounds.
What are reactants?
Substances that react together.
What are Products?
Substances formed in the reaction.
What are bonds
They are chemically joined together by strong forces
How to write an equation?
The reactants are shown on the left of the arrow, and the products are shown on the right of the arrow. Do not write an equals sign instead of an arrow. If there is more than one reactant or product, they are separated by a plus sign.
What are word equations?
They show the names of each substance involved in a reaction, and must not include any chemical symbols or formulae.
copper + oxygen → copper oxide
What are balanced/symbol equations?
it includes the symbols and formulae of the substances involved.
2Cu + O2 → 2CuO
What is combustion?
The process of burning by heat
What does exothermic mean?
Reaction in which energy is given out to the surroundings. This means heat is given off.
What does endothermic mean?
Reaction in which energy is taken in from the surroundings. The surroundings then have less energy than they started with, so the temperature falls.
What is complete combustion?
Burning in a plentiful supply of oxygen or air.
What is incomplete combustion?
Burning when there is a limited supply of air or oxygen
What is oxidation?
The gain of oxygen, or loss of electrons, by a substance during a chemical reaction.
What is a base?
The gain of oxygen, or loss of electrons, by a substance during a chemical reaction.
What does neutralise mean?
To be made neutral by removing any acidic or alkaline nature.
