Chemical Reactions Flashcards
what happens when a chemical reaction takes place
a new substance if formed
what is a chemical bond
a strong force of attractions between the different atoms to hold them together to make a compound
what are the two important processes that happen in all chemical reactions
chemical bond break
new chemical bonds form
what happens in all chemical reactions
the atoms in the molecules rearrange themselves to form new molecules
what can compounds be broken down into and when does this happen
simpler substances. during chemical reactions
what are the 2 different types of decomposition reactions
Electrolysis
Thermal decomposition
what is the definition of electrolysis
the process by which ionic substances are broken down into simpler substances when an electric current is passed throught them
what is the energy conversion when electrolysis occurs
electrolysis uses electrical energy to cause a chemical reaction to occur. electrical energy is therefore converted into chemical energy
what is the method to using electrolysis
Two electrodes are added to the solution of the compound that you want to break down.
A battery/cell is connected to the electrode to provide the energy for the reaction to take place.
An element will form at each electrode
what charge does an anode have
positive
what charge does a cathode have
negative
what charge does an anion have
positive
what charge does a cation have
negative
what charge does an electrode/ electrolyte have
negative
give the definition of thermal decomposition
thermal decomposition can be used to break up a compound into smaller particles using thermal energy
