Chemical Reactions Flashcards
What is the composition of air?
3.76 moles of Nitrogen per mole of Oxygen
When can water vapor not be neglected during a combustion process?
If the temperature is very high
Why is important to be able to predict dew point temperature?
Because water vapor can combine with sulfur dioxide to form sulfuric acid
What is air-fuel ratio?
The ratio of the mass of air to the mass of fuel
When is combustion complete?
All the carbons burns to carbon dioxide, Hydrogen to water, and sulfur to sulfur dioxide
What is stochiometric / theoretical air?
The minimum amount of air needed for complete combustion
What is excess air?
The amount of air in excess of theoretical air
What is equivalence ratio?
Actual fuel to air ratio to stoichiometric fuel-air ratio
What is Orsat gas analyzer
A device useful for analyzing the composition of combustion gases
What is the standard reference state?
22 celcius and 1 atm
What is the enthalpy of reaction?
The enthalpy difference between the enthalpy of the products at a specified state and the enthalpy of the reactants at the same state for a complete reaction
What is enthalpy of combustion ?
Enthalpy of reaction for combustion processes
What is enthalpy of formation?
The enthalpy of a substance at a specified state due to its chemical composition
What is heating value?
The amount of heat released when a fuel is burned completely in a steady flow process and the products are returned to state of the reactants
When is heating value called the higher heating value?
When water in the products is in liquid form
