Chemical Reaction types Flashcards
Decomposition reaction(catabolic reaction)
larger molecules are broke down into smaller molecules or atoms
digestion
type of decomposition reaction, in which larger food molecules are broken down into smaller ones
hydrolysis
decomposition reaction in which water must be broken apart in order for the reaction to occur. (Most digestion processes)
synthesis reaction
Anabolic reaction, atoms or molecules are bonded to form larger molecules
exergonic
one in which energy is released in the reaction. (most decomposition reactions)
endergonic
one in which energy is needed in the reaction (most synthesis reactions)
Acid
pH below 7
Base(alkali)
pH above 7
proton doners
an ionic compound which dissociates in water to release H+ ions
The more H+ ions…
the stronger the acid
Proton accepters
ionic compound that dissociates in water to produce a negative ion, likes to bond with H+ ions
neutral
being neither an acid or a base, has a pH of 7
salt
example of a neutral ionic compound
organic compound
a compound composed of carbon, found in living organisms
inorganic compound
a compound without carbon
