Chemical + physical digestion Flashcards
What is digestion
The process of breaking down large food molecules into smaller molecules that can then be absorbed into the bloodstream and transported to cells.
What is physical digestion?
Breakdown of large chunks of food into smaller chunks of food to increase the surface area to volume ratio for digestive enzymes.
What are two examples of physical digestion?
chewing, muscle contractions
what is chemical digestion?
when Enzymes break down large complex structures into their simplest form where they are absorbed into the bloodstream and transported to cells.
what are the three main digestive enzymes?
protease
amylase
lipase
What does protease do? (whats their optimal ph?)
Breaks down proteins into amino acids
- Proteins are digested in the stomach with help from stomach acid
- optimal ph is 1.6
what does amylase do (whats their optimal ph)?
Breaks down carbohydrates (starch) into sugars
- Amylase is located in the saliva of the mouth
- Optimal ph: 7.0 (neutral)
what does lipase do (whats their optimal ph?)
- Breaks down fats into fatty acids and glycerol
- Fats are digested in the small intestine with the help from bile (made in the liver)
- Optimal ph: 8.0
What are the four stages of the digestive process?
- Ingestion: The taking in of nutrients (food enters the gastrointestinal tract)
- Digestion: Food is physically and chemically broken down
- Absorption: Nutrients are absorbed in the bloodstream.
Egestion: Undigested food is eliminated from the body
