Chemical Nomenclature Flashcards
naming formulas how to write formulas
Subscript in Formula Represents
number of atoms of each element present in molecule
What order are elements written in within a formula?
left to right and if in same column, up to down
H is exception - It follows except in G7A and G6A
H is written first in the exceptions
When the prefix ends in an “a” or “o” and the name of the second element begins with a vowel…
then the “a” or “o” is dropped
Metal Cations
just the name of the metal plus the word “ion” after
Metals with more than one charge
must include the charge in the name as a roman numeral in addition to the Metal Cation rule
Ht^2+ –> mercury(II) ion
Nonmetal Anions suffix
-ide
Br^- –> bromide
Cation goes before or after the anion?
before
CuO –> copper(II) oxide
What is the proper name setup for only hydrogen and one other element
“hydro___ic acid”
all acids have H
Proper name for H__O
“____ic acid”
H2SO4 –> sulfuric acid
If there’s an extra oxygen in a formula then
prefix becomes “per__ic acid
HClO3 –> perchloric acid
If the formula is short one oxygen then
it becomes “hypo___ous”
HNO2 –> nitrous acid
When to use “-ate” and “-ite”
one extra O and one less H is -ate
one less O and one less H is -ite
If you add H to an oxyanion then
the name is the same with “hydrogen” at the beginning of the name
