chemical kinetics Flashcards
rate law
The expression in which the rate of the reaction is given in terms of the molar concentration of the reactants with each term raised to some power which may or may not be same as stoichiometric coefficient of a balanced chemical equ.
rate constant
the rate of the rxn when the concentration of the reactants is unity.
order
sum of the powers of teh concentrations of the rxns in the rate law expression.
molecularity of a reaction
the number of reactiong species taking part in an elementary rxn which must collide simultaneously inorder to bring about a chemical reaction is called molecularity of a reaction.
rds
the slowest step in a complex rxn is called rds
mech of rxn
diff steps in which comp rxns take place.
pseudo 1st order rxn
exns which are not truly teh 1st order but under certain conditions becomes reactions of teh 1st order are called pseudo 1st order rxn.
temp dependence of teh rate of a rxn.
most of the chem rxns are accelerated by teh increase in teh temp, it has been found that for a chemical rxn with rise in temp by 10 degrees the rate constant is nearly doubled.
charc. of activated comp.
- short lived
- breaks down to form stable compounds.
- high PE
most prob KE
the distribution of KE can be given by the plotting of fraction of molecules with given KE. The peak of the curve corresponds to the most prob KE
catalyst
is teh substance which increases teh rate of teh rxn without undergoing any permanent chemical change.
