Chemical Kinetics Flashcards
What is Chemical Kinetics?
This is a branch of chemistry that deals with the study of rates of change,rate laws, reaction mechanisms and catalysis.
What is Reaction rate?
The change in concentration of a reactant or a product with time.
How is Chemical Kinetics important?
Drug design,in pollution control, and food processing
What are the factors that affect rate of change?
Concentration, temperature, catalysis and particle size.
Formula for average reaction rates.
Average rate= change in number of moles of B / change in time
Formula for rate?
Rate= change in concentration over time period
Formula for instantaneous rate.
Instantaneous rate=rate of specific instant time
Formula for rate constant
k=rate/reactant
Reaction rates and stoichiometry
Rate=-1/a ∆[a]/∆t =-1/b ∆[b]/∆t =1/c ∆[c]/∆t……
What is rate law?
It is the relationship of the rate of a reaction to the rate constant and the concentrations of the reactants raised to the powers.
How do you calculate the order overall?
X+y
What is the relationship between reaction concentration and time.
Integrated rate law
What is Integrated rate law ?
An expression that shows the relationship between concentration of a reactant or product and time
First order reactions
k=rate/[A]. 1/s [A]- is the concentration of A at any time
[A]o is the concentration of A at time
Hence In [A] = In[A]o-kt
t 1/2 = In2/k. In minutes
What is half life?
The time taken for the concentration of a reactant to decompose to half it’s initial concentration.
