CHEMICAL EQUILIBRIA Flashcards
State which the rates of the forward and reverse reactions are equal and the concentrations of the reactants remain constant.
CHEMICAL EQUILIBRIUM
dynamic process, conversion of reactants to products and products to reactants
EQUILIBRIUM
the expression obtained by multiplying the product concentrations and dividing by the multiplied reactant concentrations, with each concentration raised to a power presented by the coefficient in the balanced equation.
EQUILIBRIUM EXPRESSION
the value obtained when equilibrium concentrations of the chemical species are substituted in the equilibrium expression.
EQUILIBRIUM CONSTANT
a reaction where all of the products and reactants are in the physical same state.
HOMOGENOUS EQUILIBRIUM
a reaction involving reactants and products in more than one phase.
HETEROGENOUS EQUILIBRIUM
if a system at equilibrium is disturbed by external stress, the system adjusts to partially offset the stress as the system attains a new equilibrium position.
Le Chatelier’s Principle
French chemist who proposed Le Chatelier’s principle.
Henry-Louise Le Chatelier (1850-1936)
addition of more product substances
shift equilibrium to the left
addition of more reactant substances
shift to the right
either speed up or retard the rate at which equilibrium is attained by affecting the rates of both the forward and the backward reacts
CATALYST
the equilibrium constant for a solid substance dissolving in an aqueous solution
SOLUBILITY PRODUCT CONSTANT
