Chemical Equations Flashcards
What does a chemical equation represent?
A chemical reaction using the symbols of the elements involved, details both the reactants and the products
Reactants
Substances before the reaction
Products
Substances after the reaction
What does the arrow in the chemical equation symbolise?
The direction of the reaction, from the reactants to the products
How would I know if the reaction was reversible?
A two sided arrow
What does a reversible reaction mean?
Meaning that the reaction can go back and forwards, the reactants can form the products and the products can form the reactants
What does the law of conservation mass state?
No atoms are created or destroyed in a chemical reaction, number of each type of atom before a reaction equals the number after the reaction(balanced equation)
Balancing chemical equations
Ensures that the same number of each type of atom is present on both sides of the equation
How are substances represented?
By their symbols or formulas
States of matter
Solid (s)
Liquid (l)
Gas (g)
Aqueous (aq)
What condition could be required for a reaction to take place?
Heat,light,catalyst
What is stoichiometry?
Study of quantitative relationships or ratios of amounts of reactants and products in a chemical reaction expressed by a balanced chemical equation
An example of stoichiometry
If the equation reads 2H2+O2—>2H2O
This means for every two molecules of hydrogen gas one molecule of oxygen gas is required to make two molecules of water
Exothermic
Releasing heat
Endothermic
Absorbing heat
