Chemical Energy Flashcards
Define enthalpy change.
The change in energy of a reaction
Define enthalpy of combustion.
The energy released when 1 mole of a substance burns completely in oxygen.
Is combustion always exothermic or endothermic?
Exothermic
Define enthalpy of solutions.
The energy change when 1 mole of a substance dissolves completely in water
Does making bonds require energy?
No and therefore its endothermic
Does breaking bonds require energy?
Yes and therefore its exothermic
Define bond enthalpy.
The energy required to break 1 mole of H-Cl bonds.
Define mean bond.
the average energy required to break 1 mole of bonds for a bond that is found in a number of different compounds or environments.
What does Hess’s Law state?
The change for a reaction is the same regardless of the direction its going.
