Chemical Characteristics pt2 Flashcards
What is Soil Carbon?
Soil organic carbon is the carbon associated with soil organic matter
How is Soil Carbon measured?
By taking a field sample and returning it to the laboratory to measure soil carbon levels
How does Soil Carbon affect plant production?
Carbon is used to maintain and support plant growth and it supports good soil structure by holding soil particles together
How is Nutrient Status measured?
To check if soil has enough nutrients, farmers take samples and send them to a lab. The lab sends back a report telling them what’s in the soil.
What is Nutrient Status?
Soil nutrient status is the make up and amount of nutrients that are present in the soil
How does Nutrient Status affect plant production?
Declining nutrient status result in decreased yield
How can Nutrient Status be modified?
Use of fertilisers - inorganic (Urea, Superphosphate) or organics (Manure, green manuring) to address deficiencies
