What are two good indicators to use for finding a specific pH of a solution?
Phenolphthalein- goes colourless pink in alkalis
Methyl orange- red in acids, yellow in alkalis
Give other examples of indicators
Universal indicator
Litmus paper
What is a base?
Any substance that can react with an acid to form a salt?
What apparatus do you use to carry out titration?
Pipette
Burette
Conical flask
Acids
What do acids in water produce?
Protons
Why do strong acids like hydrochloric acid dissolve fully in water?
The acid particles dissociate to release H+ ions
Why do weak acids not dissolve fully in water
Not many of the acid particles dissociate so not as many H+ ions are released
If there is a weak acid what can you say about where there will be a more concentrated side of the equilibria equation?
It will shift heavily on the left
When asked about acid pH changing in reactions how do you work out the concentration of the acid change?
Find the change of pH
Times the answer by 10 to the power of (the difference in pH)
