Q

What are Ores?

A

Rock compounds from which metals can be extracted from. Many of these metals have been oxidised.

Q

how can a metal be extracted from a metal oxide?

A

Must be reduced (to have oxygen removed, the opposite of oxidation)

Q

What is the reactivity series?

A

A list of metals in order of their reactivity with the most reactive metals at the top and the least reactive ones at the bottom.

Q

What happens when either magnesium, aluminium, zinc or iron reacts with water or dilute acid?

A

There is a very sloe reaction . If it is a dilute acid, the fizz gives off hydrogen gas and a salt is formed.

Q

How is displacement used in determining reactivity series?

A

A more reactive metal will displace a less reactive metal from an aqueous solution of one of its salts.

Q

What does an ionic equation show?

A

It only shows the atoms and ions that change in a reaction. Anything that does not change is not included in the chemical equation. A half equation is an ionic equation that shows only the change to one of the reactants.

Q

What is metal extraction dependent on?

A

How easy it is to extract from ore, how much metal the ore contains and the demand for certain metals.

Q

How can carbon be used to extract metals?

A

The oxides of metals below carbon in the reactivity series can be reduced by carbon to give the metal element. Those more reactive than carbon must be extracted using electrolysis of the molten metal.
