chemical changes 🍁 Flashcards
what is the reaction between a metal and oxygen called and what is produced?
1) oxidation
2) metal oxide
what are reduction and oxidation reactions? (in terms of oxygen NOT electrons)
reduction- loss of oxygen
oxidation- gain of oxygen
what is the reactivity series?
a chart showing the reactivity of metals, from most reactive to least
what determines the reactivity of a metal?
its tendency to form positive ions when reacting with other substances
what are the only non-metals in the reactivity series?
hydrogen and carbon
recall the reactivity series (in order, including hydrogen and carbon).
hint: 15 elements
potassium
sodium
lithium
calcium
magnesium
aluminium
carbon
zinc
iron
tin
lead
hydrogen
copper
silver
gold
what is a displacement reaction?
when a more reactive element displaces a less reactive element in a compound
how do potassium, sodium, lithium and calcium react with (cold) water and acid?
violently/rapidly, but slower as the list goes on
how do magnesium and aluminium react with (cold) water and acid?
water- slowly
acid- rapidly
how do zinc and iron react with (cold) water and acid?
water- no reaction OR (iron) slow rusting
acid- slowly
how do copper, silver and gold react with (cold) water and acid?
no reaction at all
what are the products when water and metals react?
metal hydroxide + hydrogen
what are ores?
all metals (excluding gold, silver and platinum) are found as compounds (ores) due to their high reactivity
how are ores extracted? (2 ways)
1) metals more reactive than carbon- electrolysis
2) metals less reactive than carbon- reduction
