Chemical Changes Flashcards
What is oxidation?
When a substance gains oxygen
What is reduction?
When a substance loses oxygen
What is a displacement reaction?
A reaction where a more reactive metal displaces a less reactive metal from a compound
How are unreactive metals found on Earth?
In their natural state
How can metals less reactive than carbon be extracted?
Reduction with carbon. Carbon displaces the metal in a metal oxide
How are metals more reactive than carbon extracted?
By electrolysis
How is oxidation defined in terms of electron transfer?
loss of electrons
How is reduction defined in terms of electron transfer?
gain of electrons
What is the general equation for a reaction between metals and
acids?
Metal + acid → salt + hydrogen
What is a redox reaction?
Redox reactions are reactions where both oxidation and reduction are taking place
Which metals in the reactivity series will react with acid?
Those above hydrogen
How is a soluble salt formed?
1) React the excess acid with some insoluble chemical (e.g. metal oxide)
2) Filter off the leftovers
3) Crystallise the product
What are bases?
Bases are compounds that neutralize acids
What are alkailis?
alkalis are soluble bases - produce hydroxide ions in aqueous solutions
What are acids?
acids produce hydrogen ions in aqueous solutions
What do acids produce in aqueous solutions?
Hydrogen ions (H+)
What do alkalis produce in aqueous solutions?
Hydroxide ions (OH-)
What is the pH scale?
The measure of acidity/alkalinity of a solution
What is a strong acid?
A strong acid is completely ionized in aqueous solution
What is a weak acid?
A weak acid is only partially ionized in aqueous solution
What happens to pH as the concentration of H+ increases?
The pH decreases
What is a concentrated acid?
Concentrated acid has lots of moles of acid per unit
What is a dilute acid?
Dilute acid has a few moles of acid per unit
What is electrolysis?
The passing of an electric current through ionic substances that are molten or in solution to break them down into elements
