Chemical changes Flashcards
Acids and alkalis
Acids = PH 1-6 Neutral = PH 7 Alkaline = PH = more than 7
How are salts made?
Acids react with metals or ammonium. Salt is formed by replacing hydrogen ions in the acids with metal ions.
SALT WORD PROCESS
Acid + metal = salt + hydrogen
Strong acid
ALL ions dissociate into H+ ions
Why are all Alkali’s bases but not all bases are Alkali’s?
All alkali’s are soluble in water
Cation
Positive ion
Anion
Negative ions
Which electrode do anions and cations go to
Cations go to anode
Anions go to Cathode
OPPOSITES ATTRACT
What occurs at each electode?
Cations gain electrons
Anions lose electrons
During the electrolysis of water what happens?
Small proportion of molecules dissociate into ions. H+ ions go to cathode - become hydrogen gas.
OH- ions go to anode - become Oxygen gas.
Volume of hydrogen is 2x the amount of oxygen given off
What are electrolytes?
Ionic compounds in a molten state or ones dissolved in water.
