Chemical Change #2 Flashcards
The smallest unit that makes up matter and has the characteristics of an element. These are made up of protons, neutrons, and electrons and can only be seen with very high powered microscopes.
Atom
The temperature at which a substance changes from the liquid phase to the gas phase
Boiling Point
The study of matter & how matter behaves or changes
Chemistry
This takes place on the atomic level and produces a new substance
Chemical Change or Chemical Reaction
A characteristic of a substance that is observed when it undergoes a chemical change
Chemical Property
An isolated system that does not interact with other systems
Closed System
Made up of different kinds of elements, forming a new substance with different properties from the original elements
Compounds
The ability of elements to transmit heat or electricity
Conductivity
This law states that matter cannot be created or destroyed in a chemical change. It can only change forms. The same overall amount of matter is present before and after the chemical change
Conservation of Matter
Any chemical change that causes a material to be worn away
Corrosion
The physical property of metals that are capable of being drawn out or hammered into a thin wire or strip
Ductile
Substances that are made up of only one kind of atom and they cannot be broken down by chemical reactions.
Elements
The physical property of metals that are capable of being bent, extended or shaped through force, such as pressure and beating with a hammer or roller
Malleability
The temperature at which a substance changes from the solid phase to the liquid phase
Melting Point/freezing point
An element that is shiny, a conductor of heat and/or electricity, and can be rolled, pounded, or stretched into various shapes. Characteristics include conductivity, reactivity, and ability to combine to make alloys
