Chemical Bonds Flashcards
What are the three types of chemical bonds?
Ionic bond, covalent bond, hydrogen bond
What is a chemical bond?
Is the force of attraction the holds together the atoms of a molecule or a compound.
Ionic bond
The force of attraction that holds together ions of opposite charges.
Covalent bond
Is when two or more atoms share electrons rather than giving up or gaining.
Hydrogen bond
Forms when a hydrogen atom with a partial positive charge attracts the partial negative charge of neighbouring electronegative atoms.
What are the most common chemical bonds in the body?
Covalent bond
Catalyst
Is a compound that speeds up chemical reactions by lowering a activation energy needed for a reaction to occur.
( does not alter the difference in potential energy between the reactants and the products. Rather it lowers the amount of energy needed to start the reaction)
Cation
Is when the number of protons exceeds the number electrons
Anion
When the number of electrons exceeds the number of protons
What is the most common chemical bond in the body.
Covalent bond
What is activation energy
The initial energy investment is needed to start a reaction.( reactants must absorb enough energy for their chemical bonds to become unstable and their valence electrons to form new combinations)
