Chemical Bonds Flashcards
From ionic and covalent to metallic bonding
What is a covalent bond?
A type of chemical bonding in which two electrons are shared between the atoms, each electron is provided by one atom involved in the bond.
Atoms share electrons in order to lower their energies and remain stable.
What is a non polar covalent bond?
A bond in which the electron density is shared equally between atoms.
In this case both atoms sharing the electrons must have a similar electronegativity
What is a polar covalent bond?
A bond in which the electron density is not shared equally between the atoms.
In this case one of the atoms has a greater electronegativity so it atracts the electrons strongly towards its nucleus.
What is an ionic bond?
A type of bond in which an electron is Transferred from one atom to the other
In this type of bonding two ions are formed, one positively charged and one negatively charged, the atraction comes from the electrostatic interaction between this oppositely charged atoms.
What is a metallic bond?
A type of chemical bond that holds the atoms together in a metal.
The bonding arises from the electrostatic force between the ionic nuclei of the metal and the surrounding electrons, this electrons are free to move between the metal nuclei.
