Chemical Bonds Flashcards
Chemical Bonds
Force of attraction that exists between atoms
Examples of chemical bonds
Ionic and covalent
Compounds
Substance that is made of many elements
Valence electrons
Number of electrons on the outermost energy level of an atom
Stable atoms
An atom is stable when its outermost energy level is fully occupied. Less likel to bon with other atoms.
Example of stable atoms
Noble gases like Neon, they have stable atoms structures and will not for chemical bonds with other atoms’
Ionic bonding
An ionic bond forms when electrons are transferred from one atom to another.
Examples of ionic bonding
Usually a metal and non metal.
Covalent bonding
Chemical bond forms when atoms share electrons.
Example of covalent bonding
H2O (water) two non-metals
Molecule
Group of atoms held together by covalent bonds.
Ion
A charged ion. An atom gains or loses an electron and therefore carries an electric charge.
Cation
Positive ion that has lost electrons, it has a positive charge.
Anion
Negative ion that has gained electrons, it has a negative charge.
Reactants
Substances that are present at the beginning of a chemical reaction
