Chemical Bonding, Valence Bond Theory, Molecular Orbital Theory, Hybridisation Flashcards
Chemical bonding
A force that holds the atoms of various elements together
Valence shell
The outer most shell of an atom
Valence electron
The electrons which occupy the valence shell
Inert
A substance that is not chemically reactive (don’t form compounds with other elements)
Octet rule
When bonding occurs atoms tend to reach an electron arrangement of 8 electrons in the outer shell by losing, going or sharing of electrons
Covalent bond
Formed by the sharing of pairs of electrons, represented by a solid line
Heteroatomic molecules
Molecules which are made up of atoms of different elements, bonding pairs of electrons are shared unequally by the atoms
Single covalent bond
Bond that shares 1 pair of electrons
Double covalent bond
Bond that shares 2 pairs of electrons
Triple covalent bond
Bond that shares 3 pairs of electrons
Dative bond (coordinate bond)
Type of covalent bond formed when one atom donates it’s electron pair to another atom
Bond length
The equilibrium distance between the centres of two bonded atoms
Bond angle
The equilibrium angle between the lines that join two atoms to a third atom
