Chemical Bonding Flashcards
What is ionic bonding
Ionic bondis the electrostatic force of attraction between oppositely-charged ions formed by the complete transfer of electrons from an atom to another atom
Which ionic compound has a higher melting point between NaCl and NaBr
NaCl has a higher melting point compared to NaBr because the Br ion is larger than the Cl ion hence there is less electrostatic force as compared to NaCl that has a greater electrostatic force
The atomic radius across a group decreases /increases?
Decreases
Why does MgCl have a higher melting point than NaCl
It’s because Mg ion has a higher charge and the ion is bigger
Describe a covalent bond
Covalent bondis the electrostatic force of attraction that two neighbouring nuclei have for a localised pair of electrons shared between them
