Chemical Bonding Flashcards
Nucleus?
The nucleus has positive protons and neutral neutrons.
Atom?
An atom is the smallest part of an element which still has the properties of that element.
Electrons?
Negative electrons circle the nucleus in shells.
Atomic number?
The number of protons in an atom.
Mass number?
The number of protons plus neutrons.
Compound?
When two or more atoms of different elements have a chemical bond joining them together.
Octet rule?
Atoms will bond together so that each atom attains an electron arrangement with 8 electrons in its outermost shell.
Ionic bonding?
Is when one atom gives electrons and the other atom takes electrons to get a full outer shell.
Covalent bonding?
Is when both atoms share electrons to get a full outer shell.
Single covalent bonds?
Single covalent bonds occur when atoms share one pair of electrons.
Double covalent bonds?
A double covalent bond is formed when atoms share two pairs of electrons .
