chemical bonding Flashcards
formation of ions
an ion is formed when an atom or a group of atoms loses/gains electrons to acquire an electrical charge
lose or gain to form duplet/octet config to achieve greater stability
Positive ions
positive ions: Cations (think of it as pawsitive charge)
atoms LOSES electrons to form pos. ions
negative ions
anions
atoms GAIN electrons to form neg. ions
noble gases
tend to be unreactive
ionic bonding
(for an example can refer to notebook)
–> metals and non-metals
–> when metallic atoms lose electrons, they form cations
–> ~ gain electrons, they form anions
checklist for electronic config
- size of ions: larger ions = more shells
- no. of electrons transferred
- charge of ions
- stable electronic config
- MUST have KEY
dot and cross diagram (see notebook)
covalent bonding
(see notebook for eg)
–> mainly between atoms of non metals
–> sharing of electrons between atoms occur in the valence shell.
