Chemical Bonding Flashcards
Chemical Bond
a force of attraction between two atoms
Covalent Bond
bonds between two nonmetals as a result of sharing electrons
Ionic Bond
bonds between a metal and a nonmetal as a result of transferring electrons
Diatomic Molecule
molecules that when they are found alone are always in pairs
Polyatomic Ions
a charged set of 2 or more covalently charged atoms
Lattice Energy
energy released when one mole of an ionic crystalline structure is formed from a gaseous ion
used to compare the strength of ionic bonds
Octet Rule
chemical compounds lose, gain, or share electrons to gain a full outer shell
formula unit vs molecular formula
formula unit - smallest number of atoms and ratio needed to form the substance
molecular formula - the formula for the substance
Why do crystals have higher melting/boiling points?
Crystal bonds are much stronger than simply inter molecular forces making it harder to melt/boil
metallic bond
valence electrons are shared among all atoms in the compound
dipole-dipole forces
attraction between 2 permanent dipoles
London Dispersion forces
attraction between 2 instantaneous dipoles
