Chemical Bonding Flashcards
What are Van der Waals?
Van der Waals forces are weak attractive forces between molecules resulting from temporary dipoles. They are the olny force of attraction between non-polar molecules.
Are some Van der Waals forces stronger than others?
The strength of VdW forces increases as the molecule gets bigger.
2 reasons why the VdW forces are stronger in larger molecules?
- The relative molecular mass increases
2. The number of electrons increases.
What are Dipole-Dipole forces?
Dipole-dipole forces are forces of attraction between the negative pole of one polar molecule and the positive pole of another polar molecule.
What is hydrogen bonding?
Hydrogen bonds are a particular type of dipole-dipole attraction between molecules in which hydrogen atoms are bonded to nitrogen, oxygen or fluorine.
What is the rule for dissolving covalent compounds in water?
LIKE DISSOLVES LIKE
How is Ammonia (NH3) soluble in Water (H2O)?
It forms hydrogen bonds with the water molecules.
