Q

The different _____ of an element have the same numbers of protons and electrons, but they have a different numbers of neutrons.

A

isotopes

17
Q

What is a radioisotope/radioactive isotope?

A

“any of several species of the same chemical element with different masses whose nuclei are unstable and dissipate excess energy by spontaneously emitting radiation in the form of alpha, beta, and gamma rays.”

18
Q

What is an ion?

A

An ion is an atom or molecule with an electrical charge resulting from a gain or loss of one or more electrons

19
Q

Define ionic bond

A

type of linkage formed from the electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions in a chemical compound. Such a bond forms when the valence (outermost) electrons of one atom are transferred permanently to another atom. The atom that loses the electrons becomes a positively charged ion (cation), while the one that gains them becomes a negatively charged ion (anion).

20
Q

Define covalent bond

A

the interatomic linkage that results from the sharing of an electron pair between two atoms. The binding arises from the electrostatic attraction of their nuclei for the same electrons. A covalent bond forms when the bonded atoms have a lower total energy than that of widely separated atoms.
