CHEMICAL ANALYSIS Flashcards
what is the test for detecting chlorine?
chlorine bleaches damp litmus paper, turning it white
what’s the test for oxygen?
if you place a glowing splint inside a test tube containing oxygen it will be relit
what’s the test for carbon dioxide?
bubbling carbon dioxide through lime water will turn the solution cloudy
what’s the test for hydrogen?
if you hold a lit splint at the open end of the test tube it will make a “squeaky pop” sound
what’s the test for carbonate ions?
add dilute acid to solution
connect the test tube to lime water
if lime water turns cloudy it means carbon ions are present
what is the test for sulfate ions?
add dilute hydrochloride acid
add barium chloride
if there’s a white precipitate it contains sulphate ions
what is the colour of the flame when lithium ions are present?
crimson red
what colour is the flame when sodium is present?
yellow
what is the colour of the flame when potassium is present?
lilac
what is the colour of the flame for calcium ions?
orange-red
what is the colour flame for copper ions?
green
how would you test for lithium carbonate?
firstly you will place it under a flame to observe if the flame turns crimson
next to test for carbon you add dilute acid and then connect that test tube to limewater, if it goes cloudy it is present
what is the test for halide ions?
add dilute nitric acid
add silver nitrate
chloride=white precipitate
bromide=cream precipitate
iodine=yellow precipitate
how do you test for metal hydroxides?
add sodium hydroxide
observe formed insoluble hydroxide
cooper=blue iron(||)=green iron(|||)=brown calcium and magnesium=white aluminium= white but dissolves in solution
