Chemical Analysis Flashcards
What is a pure substance?
A single element or compound not mixed with any other substance
What is a formulation?
A mixture of compounds in measured quantities that has been designed as a useful product
Describe paper chromatography:
A start line is drawn near the bottom of the paper and the mixture is spotted on the line
A beaker is filled with small amounts of solvent
Paper is hung on a rod and placed in a beaker
Solvent travels up the paper separating compontents
Before solvent reaches the end the paper is taken out and the finish line is drawn
Paper is called the stationary phase and the solvent is the mobile phase
How is Rf calculated?
Distance moved by the compound / distance moved by the solvent
What is the test for hydrogen
Burning splint over gas
-Squeaky pop
What is the test for oxygen?
Glowing splint over gas
-Splint relights
What is the test for chlorine?
Damp blue litmus paper
Bleaches it white
What are captions and anions?
Cations are positive ions
Anions are negative ions
