Chemical Analysis Flashcards
What is the flame test got Lithium
Crimson red
What is the flame test for sodium
Yellow
What is the flame test for Pottasium
Lilac
What is the flame test for copper
Green
What is the flame test for Calcium
Brick red/ red orange
What can testing with sodium hydroxide be used to identify
Aluminium, Calcium, Magnesium, Copper II, Iron II, Iron III
When testing with sodium hydroxide, what substances produce a white precipitate
Aluminium, Calcium, Magnesium
What colour precipitate is produced when testing for Fe II with sodium hydroxide
Green
What colour precipitate is produced when testing for Fe III with sodium hydroxide
Brown
What colour precipitate is produced when testing for Cu II with sodium hydroxide
Blue
What is the test for Carbonate ions
Dilute acid added to said solution will cause fizzing during to co2 being produced, and can be confirmed by testing with limewater, which turns limewater cloudy
What is the test for sulfate ions
Dilute HCL followed by barium chloride solution being added to the solution being tested. If a white precipitate forms, the compound contains sulphate ions
Test for halide ions
Dilute nitric acid followed by silver nitrate solution is added to compound being tested.
Chloride - white precipitate
Bromide - Cream precipitate
Iodide - Yellow precipitate
Advantages of instrumental methods of analysis
More accurate
More sensitive
More rapid
Can be tested with small samples
Disadvantages of instrumental methods of analysis
Expensive
Complex (require training)
Comparison with known data is needed
