Chemestry Flashcards
Chemistry
the study of matter, it’s composition, and its interactions
Matter
Everything, anything with mass (amount of matter) and volume (space it takes up)
Atom
Smallest unit of matter, cannot be broken down
Elements
A type of atom, a pure substance that cannot be broken down
Symbols are either 1 capital letter or 1 capital and a lowercase letter
Chemical bond
The link between two atoms, holding them together
Substances
Something you cannot break into simpler parts using physical changes
Molecules and compounds
Molecules
A combination of two or more atoms
Compound
Two or more elements chemically combined
Elements are in specific amounts as seen in their chemical formula (ex. H₂O)
Can only be broken down with chemical reactions
Mixture
Two or more substances physically combined in any amounts
They do not change chemically
Heterogeneous and homogeneous mixtures
Homogeneous Mixture
Two or more substances that aren’t evenly mixed, you cannot see different parts
Heterogeneous Mixture
Two or more substances that are evenly mixed, you cannot see see different parts.
Solution
A homogeneous mixture
Solute
Substance that gets dissolved
Solvent
Substance that does the dissolving
Physical Properties
Any characteristic that can be observed using your 5 senses without changing the substance
Chemical Properties
Any characteristic that describes how matter interacts with another substance
Biological property
The characteristic of having all 9 features of living things
Physical Change
Change to the physical properties of matter, substance is not changed into a new substance
Chemical Change
Change to the chemical properties of matter, substance is changed into a new substance with new properties, cannot change back
Law of Conservation of Matter/Mass
Matter cannot be created nor destroyed,
The number of atoms/mass of the reactants equals the number of atoms/mass of the products.
Phase/State of matter
solid, liquid, and gas
Changed by changing temperature or pressure
Solid
Definite shape & definite volume
Particles packed together and vibrate but have fixed positions
Lower energy
Liquid
No definite shape but has definite volume
Particles spread apart
Medium energy
Gas
No definite shape & no definite volume
Particles spread far apart
High energy
