Chem Vocab 4-6 Flashcards
Strong Acid (Base)
Completely dissociates when dissolved in water
Weak Acid (Base)
Does not fully dissociate when dissolved in water
Arrhenius Acid
A substance that produces H+ (H3O) in water
Arrhenius Base
A substance that produces OH- in water
Brønsted Acid
A proton donor
Brønsted Base
A proton acceptor
System
The specific part of the universe that is of interest in the study
Surroundings
The rest of the universe outside the system
Open System
Exchanges mass and energy, usually in the form of heat with its surroundings
Closed System
Allows the transfer of energy (heat) but not mass
Isolated System
Does not allow the transfer of either mass or energy
Thermal Energy
The energy associated with the random motion of atoms and molecules
Chemical Energy
The energy stored within the bonds of a chemical substance
Potential Energy
The energy available by virtue of an object’s position
Kinetic Energy
the energy an object has due to its motion
Law of Conservation of Energy
Energy can neither be created nor destroyed, but can only be transformed from one form to another
Thermochemistry
The study of heat change on chemical reactions
Exothermic Process
Any process that gives off heat- transfers thermal energy energy from the system to the surroundings
Endothermic Process
Any process in which heat has to be supplied to the system from the surroundings
