Name the 6 most common ways to express the concentration of a solution.
- Molarity (M)
- Molality (m)
- Mole fraction (X)
- Percent composition by mass (%)
- Parts per million (ppm)
- Normality (N)
Is each of the following an oxidizing agent, or a reducing agent?
- MnO4-
- NaBH4
- Cr2O7
- O2
- LiAlH4
- MnO4-; Oxidizing
- NaBH4; Reducing
- Cr2O7; Oxidizing
- O2; Oxidizing
- LiAlH4; Reducing
Most common oxidizing agents contain oxygen atoms, particularly in the presence of metal atoms
Most common reducing agents contain hydrogen atoms in the presence of metal atoms.
Define:
osmotic pressure
Osmotic pressure is the pressure that results from osmosis. As water molecules move to dilute solutions equally, the pressure outside one solution will change, and this pressure is the osmotic pressure.
What is the limiting reactant in the reaction
CH4 + 2 O2 →
CO2 + 2 H2O
if there are 24g CH4 and 64g O2 present?
O2 is the limiting reactant.
Converting grams to moles: there are 2 moles of O2 and 1.5 moles of CH4. Due to the 2:1 ratio in the equation, two moles of O2 are needed for every mole of CH4 consumed.
The 2 moles of O2 will react completely with 1 mole CH4, leaving 0.5 moles excess CH4remaining.
A complex ion ____ solubility while a common ion ____ solubility.
increases; decreases
Explain the significance of the triple point.
The triple point is the point at which a substance can exist in equilibrium in all three states (solid, liquid, and gas).
Which of the following will have the lowest freezing point?
- 1M BrCl
- .5M NaSO3
- 1.5M KCl
Freezing point depression is depedent on the number solute atoms per volume
MBrCl=1x2= 2
NaSO3=.5x3= 1.5
KCl= 1.5x2=3
Therefore, KCl will have the lowest freezing point.
