Chem general terms Flashcards
Volume
The amount of 3-dimensional space an object takes up
Mass
The measure for the amount of matter
Matter
Anything that has mass and takes up space
Atom
The smallest unit of of an element
Element
A pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances and is made of one atom
Compound
A substance that can be broken down into simpler substances, has 2 or more elements
Extensive properties
Depends on the amount of matter present. Ex: volume
Intensive properties
Do not depend on the amount of matter present. Ex: melting point
Physical properties
A characteristics that can be observed or measured with out changing the identity of the substance. Ex: boiling point
Chemical properties
Relates to the substance’s ability to undergo changes that that transform it into different substances. Ex: charcoal
Physical change/reaction
A change in a substance that does not involve a change in its identity
Chemical change/ reaction
A change in which one or more substances are converted into different substances
Mixture
A blend of 2 or more kinds of matter. Substances are NOT chemically bonded
Homogenous/
solutions
Mixtures that are the same in composition. Ex: salt water
heterogeneous
Mixtures that are not uniform throughout. Ex: clay in water
