Chem for CXC section A Flashcards
what are the 3 states of matter
Solids
Liquids
Gas
Arrangement of particles in solids
In a solid, the particles are pack together tightly in a neat and ordered arrangement.
Arrangement of particles in liquids
The particles in liquids are arranged in a random way, and are close together, touching many of their neighbors.
Arrangement of particles in gases
The particles in gases are widely spaced and randomly arranged.
Diffusion
the movement of molecules from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration until evenly distributed.
Osmosis
the movement of water molecules from a solution with a high concentration of water molecules to a solution with a lower concentration of water molecules, through a cell’s partially permeable membrane.
Relative mass and Charge of protons, neutron and electrons.
Relative mass Charge
Protons- 1 +1
Neutrons- 1 0
Electrons- 1/1840 -1
Mass number=
Mass number= no.of protons + no.of neutrons
Outer most shell is know as:
Valence Shell
Isotopes
Atoms of an element that all have the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons
Periodic table is made up of:
7periods and 18groups
What is an element
An element is a substance made up of only 1 type of atom
What is a molecule
A particle containing 2 or more non- metal atoms covalently bonded together
What is a compound
A pure substance formed when 2 / more different types of elements bond together in a chemical reaction.
3 types of bonding
Ionic, Covalent and metallic
