Chem E - Chemical Changes Flashcards
What are displacement reactions?
When a more reactive metal displaces a less reactive metal from an aqueous solution of one of its salts
What is produced when a metal reacts with oxygen?
Metal oxide
What is produced when a metal reacts with and acid?
Salt and hydrogen
What is the test for hydrogen?
Place a lighted splint, if we hear a squeaky pop then hydrogen is present
What is a base substance?
A substance which can neutralise an acid
What do you get when a metal carbonate reacts with acid?
Salt, water and carbon dioxide gas
What do you get when a metal oxide or hydroxide reacts with acid?
Salt and water
When would a metal displace the hydrogen in the acid?
If the Metal is more reactive than hydrogen
What is a base which is soluble in water called?
An alkali
What is a base which is not soluble in water called?
A base
What does insoluble mean?
Doesn’t dissolve in water
What does soluble mean?
Dissolves in water
Are metal oxides soluble on insoluble?
Insoluble
Are metal hydroxides soluble or insoluble ?
Soluble
Are metal carbonates soluble or insoluble
Most are soluble but a few are insoluble
Are metal oxides bases or alkalis?
Bases
Are metal hydroxides bases or alkalis?
Alkalis
What happens when an acid reacts with a base salt and water is produced?
Neutralisation (because water in a neutral substance)
What acid does hydrochloric acid form?
Chloride
What salt does sulfuric acid form?
Sulfate
What salt does nitric acid form?
Nitrate
